Online Dating Rapes Are Up By 600% Reports Sky News

Online Dating rapes are up by 600% reports Sky News today, in a shocking report that everyone using online sites should be aware of. Surely there must be a safer, more thoughtful and discreet way of meeting quality partners and at Matchmakers Dating we firmly believe that there is. The statistics could actually be considerably worse too, as according to the National Crime Agency, this is a crime that is often not reported and the figures could actually be much worse. Sean Sutton, the National Crime Agency's Serious Crime Analysis Section said "The pseudo closeness that people feel towards someone they have met online is a factor. This pseudo-closeness can happen very, very quickly and we are saying you could be talking to a 14 year old boy or a 60 year old woman" Mr Sutton continues "Come back a step and take it on a face to face basis when you meet in public for the first time". The force are launching a campaign to raise awareness about what Mr Sutton calls a 'new breed of rapist, without previous convictions'. As figures show that whilst 84% of people convicted of stranger rape have previous convictions, that figure drops to 49% where online dating is involved. With more than 9 million Britons currently signed up to online dating sites such as eHarmony, Match and Plenty of Fish, plus Apps such as Tinder, Grindr and Happn, there is a strong chance that these figure could increase dramatically over time. Says Ivana Franekova, Senior Membership Adviser, at Matchmakers "It is really important that people are aware of the statistics and the awareness campaign that the National Crime Agency are creating. Those using online dating sites do need to be extremely vigilant and if in doubt they should seek an alternative that is safer. At Matchmakers, every member is personally interviewed, ID checked and thoroughly vetted before they join and working closely with our Personal Matchmaking team, we monitor our members carefully and react to feedback. Which is a much safer environment to be involved in".
